User's notes

The 'invasion' continues. Eastern Rosella pair displaced by Rainbow Lorikeets. First time I've seen them nesting on Red Hill. Rainbow Lorikeets +1. Eastern Rosellas -1. Exact location close to 2011 plantings on south side of Mt Davidson.

I personally find this quite concerning. Over the last few months, I have observed a very noticeable boom in their population. Even in Fadden where they have been nesting and established for years, the change in numbers is obvious, and reports are coming in of lorikeets in suburbs where they had not been seen before. I have noticed them in Lyneham increasingly regularly after never or very rarely seeing one for over several years.
Up around the Gold Coast where I visited recently, Lorikeets were everywhere, thousands of them, but you could go days without seeing a galah, cockatoo, or corella. We did not see any rosellas at all and a Scaly-breasted Lorikeet just once. If the Rainbow Lorikeets continue to increase at this rate, I fear for our local parrot population, especially rosellas. Your observation of them displacing rosellas from their hollow is especially concerning, although not too surprising due to how aggressive they are. In Perth, they are now a declared pest and from fewer than about 10 escaped or released birds in the 1960s, they now have a massive population, and they have culled tens of thousands but they are still abundant..

Thanks Ryu, it is an interesting topic. It would be interesting to know if there has been any scientific monitoring of their impacts on Gang-gang populations and the like.... I know there have been some well publicised scientific monitoring of Gang-gang populations as an object in itself, but I havn't bothered to look to see whether those studies go further and analyse whether there is an impact of Rainbow Lorikeets on Gang-gang populations...???

Kind regards, Roy

Roy, I would assume competition for nesting sites between Rainbow Lorikeets and Gang-gangs would be minimal as Gang-gangs are larger and would probably use larger hollows than those used by Rainbow Lorikeets
