Would you have a shot of the underside or be able to say what it looked like? This might be a species of Gloeophyllum (e.g. http://canberranaturemap.org/Community/Species/15592).

It helps indeed. The genus is found commonly on coniferous wood and, when fresh, the upper surface is coloured in shades of brown, from very dark to orange-brown with the margins yellowish-brown to golden. All species have a corky, rather than fleshy, texture and the gills on the underside are often irregular, even a little maze-like rather, than arranged in simple radiating lines.
