Lets locate the remaining historic 1917 -1925 hilltop plantings.
In 1916 many of Canberra's hilltops were bare, so Walter Burley Griffin (who had an interest in colour in the landscape) directed the hills to be replanted according to a mass colour scheme. Red Hill was to have red flowers and foliage, Mt Ainslie Yellow, Black Mountain was to be pink and white, with Mugga Mugga white. Marion Mahony Griffin produced lists of suitable native plants in her notebook. Darling Pea is one of three red flowering non-local natives from her list that I have found on Red Hill. I have seen argyle apple, white box and golden wattle on Mugga Mugga - what else can we find? These are significant cultural plantings that we should look after.
