The genus Grimmia is found worldwide and it is a moss that you are likely to find in harsh, exposed areas. When dry it has a grey colour but, with a little moisture the leaves unfold from the stem and the colony becomes green. The close-up shows numerous yellowish spore capsules. Around Canberra you'll find it in exposed habitats, in particular on well-lit boulders, tiled roofs and brick/stone retaining walls around suburban car parks.
