I have no idea what this nasty looking thing is! It was starting to spread around and there were miniature versions spawning up around it.

Yes, this is Mahonia aquifolium, Oregon grape or Holly one of the many garden escapes and a really nasty one as it spreads by seeds and suckers. I spent many hours cutting and dabbing hundreds of stems in large patches behind Mackenzie Street and else where in the nature reserve.
