Significant sighting

  20 Dec 2018

New location for this species, which has a complex and crucial relationship with at least two rare butterfly species

Author's notes

The ants had the coconut smell when crushed. There were 2 nests in close proximity. The first 2 pics show the Coconut ants in the sapling Gum tree, the next 2 pics show the Coconut ants on the main base of the larger multi trunked Gum tree. The last photo shows the trees side by side. Both nests had a good number of very active ants in.

Hi RodDeb, this is a great set of photos. The images of the ants are close and clear, enabling confident identification, and the general views of the nest and trees give good information on habitat preference. Cheers, Jon
