Identification history

Sun moth (Castniidae) Synemon plana 2 Dec 2018 MichaelMulvaney

Significant sighting

2 Dec 2018

Sighting suggests at least another food plant for Golden Sun Moth

Author's notes

David Moore of unwell alerted me to these golden sun moth pupae - which appeared to be at least 5 m from any of the known food grasses. Species within 1m of pupa included Eulusine tristachya, Bromus catharticus, Hirschfeldia incana, Avena sp, Vulpia sp, Cynodon dactylon and Hypochaeris radicata

The literature says the larvae feed underground on the roots of host grass spp. so determining host specificity may be challenging I suspect.
