Don, Mathew, Will - this looks like a youngish goanna do you have an estimate to how old it may be? Is it this years or last years?

Thanks Gillian - we are particularly after sightings of this rare goanna, it helps us determine what parts of the ACT are important for it

Oh that's great! Couldn't get a great photo, just as I got close, someone came past talking very loudly. Glad it's clear enough :)

Well done Gillian! this is a very important record and the photos are good enough to identify this rare Rosenberg's Monitor.

Looks young to me too (within 3 years old I guess) but I have yet to come to grips with ageing them, even crudely. (Actually our conservation advice could be better if demographic rates were known for some populations of this species, but that is not possible until there is an accepted ageing method for wild individuals.)

Many thanks Gillian for posting this. There is only one other local goanna species, nearly gone now from the ACT region, and your photo is plenty good enough to see it was not that one.
