Tessellation means tile-like and on the rock platforms along the Shoalhaven Coast there are many examples of tessellations of varying degrees of geometric perfection. The most regular jointing patterns have developed in fine sedimentary beds such as siltstone.
The 60 and 330 degree orientations of the major joint directions are the same as those in the heritage listed tessellated pavements near Port Arthur in Tasmania. All of the tessellations lie along the line of fracture where Zealandia broke away from Australia, opening up the Tasman Sea, from around 80 to 60 million years ago.
